Standard Licence
If you are between 17 and 21, or don't want a big bike then you will need to pass the standard licence. Lessons and tests are taken on a Yamaha SR 125cc or
YBR 125cc bike, this allows you to then ride a motorcycle that produces no more than 25kw (approx 33bhp). After 2 years you can then move up to any size bike.
So what's involved ?
First we need to know what you can and can't do.
Assuming you have done your CBT, you will be able to ride the bike, the CBT isn't as strict as the "real" test. So we need to see what areas need attention. Having assessed your riding we will work on those areas the examiner will be looking for.
- Back to basics.
It may sound dull, but one day it could save your live. Driving a bike is very different to driving a car, we are more vulnerable, smaller
and less visible to other road users. As such we need to ride so that we can be seen by others, see others and ride so that we don't end up another statistic.
- Out On The Road.
- Practice.
- Test Preparation
The time spent with our instructors has been aimed towards making you a safe rider, a safe rider who is also ready for their test. We will go over what the examiner will want from you, and what to expect from the actual test.
When you've satisfactorily completed your standard test you will be restricted for 2 years to riding a bike of up to 25kW (33bhp) and a power/weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kW/kg.
After holding the standard licence for two years you are then eligible to ride any bike of any power outage.
If you're 21 or over, or if you reach 21 within the 2 year period, there are quicker ways of obtaining entitlement to ride a more powerful bike. They are called the Direct Access Scheme (DAS) and the Accelerated Access Scheme (AAS).
