Direct Access
If you are 21 or over and want to ride a larger bike of any cc, then this is for you. You will learn, and take your test on a bike that produces at least 35kw (approx 46bhp). After you pass you are free to ride any capacity bike. The bike that we use is a Kawasaki ER-5.
So what's involved ?
The Direct Access follows a similar structure to the Standard licence. The major difference is the increased power of the bike, and the difference in rider style that goes along with that power.
First we need to know what you can and can't do.
Assuming you have done your CBT, you will be able to ride the bike. The CBT isn't as strict as the "real" test, so we need to see what areas need attention. Having assessed your riding we will work on those areas the examiner will be looking for.
- Back to basics.
It may sound dull, but one day it could save your live. Driving a bike is very different to driving a car, we are more vulnerable, smaller, less visible to other road users. As such we need to ride so that we can be seen by others, see others and ride so that we don't end up another statistic.
- Out On The Road. Part I.
You can't learn to ride a bike in a class room, so we need to get out on the road. You will be in radio contact with the instructor who will guide you through manoeuvres. We will take you out initially on the smaller 125cc bike that is used for the standard licence. We don't run before we can walk. Whilst on the 125 Machine we will cover basic road skills including the following:
- Turning at junctions
- Roundabouts
- Emergency Stop
- Turn in the road
- Out of town riding (riding at 60mph)
- Hill Starts
- Out On The Road. Part II.
- Practice.
- Test Preparation
The time spent with our instructors has been aimed towards making you a safe rider, a safe rider who is also ready for their test. We will go over what the examiner will want from you, and what to expect from the actual test.
When you've satisfactorily completed your Direct Access Test you are free to ride any bike your heart desires.
